First Resolution: VRSFCSF

My first resolution has begun. For the month of January, I will be Vegan, Refined Sugar Free, and Corn Syrup Free. Known by the awkward acronym VRSFCSF.

I wanted to get the easy one out of the way in January as it will set the tone for the whole year. As such I probably need to lay down some rules. Okay.

#1: Obvy – No meat, dairy, fish, poultry, milk, eggs, cheese. This may be hard because I am already a flexitarian, leaning 95% non-strict vegetarian (I eat a TON of eggs, milk, and cheese, some fish, and meat maybe 4-5 times a year).

#2: No refined sugar or corn syrup – This means looking at the package and making sure that it has no sugar. For unlabeled foods, such as restaurant food, I will have to use my judgement. Since I already have a great familiarity with corn syrup due to a similar experiment in high school (I thought corn syrup was a conspiracy), I will just have to trust myself.

#3: No exceptions/no freebies, and harsh penalties – If I slip I will have to put $20 in a slip jar forĀ  charity.

#4: No being obnoxious about it – I hate it when people are sanctimonious about their lifestyle choices. I understand that many ideological vegans may view omnivores the same way abolitionists viewed slaveholders, but there is a fine line between being happy with your lifestyle choice and proseltyzing like a televangelist. Obviously there is no real way of monitoring or punishing myself for taking this too seriously. I just wanted to be smug about the fact that I won’t be smug.

So, those are my rules. Let’s see how this goes.
